Hits Radio Network

Bauer Media Audio cater for a wide range of audiences - with news bulletins simulcast on local Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio stations

Working across the Bauer Media Audio landscape

Bristol & the South West

My day-to-day job involves newsgathering and newsreading across Bristol, Bath and Somerset - on Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio.

I've developed a comprehensive catalogue of contacts during my time - and as a Bulletin Editor, I have the creative freedom to craft my news bulletins to suit our audiences right across the West Country.

Impactful journalism

As a bulletin editor, I'm always spotting stories on-desk - and this one remains one of the most impactful interviews I've done in my time at Bauer.

A mum from Somerset agreed to chat with us - in her campaign to increase testing at festivals for drugs following the passing of her daughter.

As a bulletin editor, you have to respond to breaking news... and the situations both at Manchester Airport and in cities across the country following the tragedy in Southport were nationally important - but also developing. It's my job to help boil it all down.

Voicing important stories with local case studies

A Somerset school's battle with crumbling concrete

A regional community pharmacist's worries about the industry's future

Crumbling concrete was a huge story in 2023 - and schools are still feeling the impact. I caught up with a local school in our patch which battled trying to keep hundreds of its students safe - with the needs of making sure their pupils were on-track with their learning.

The Blue School in Wells were a great example of proactively engaging with local leaders - and through getting to know local case studies, delving deeper into the people behind the headlines.

It's not just one - as you can read here: Bespoke 'learning village' opens at North Somerset school (planetradio.co.uk)

The people who look after the rest of us are great example of those stories we don't always hear in the media. Max Punni, who owns community pharmacies across the South West, has been vocal in his criticism of the current system - so I wanted to delve even deeper into the issues we'll all touch in some way in our lives.

This was a powerful and emotive interview - but an important story to bring the everyday issues to light that many may not ever think about.

The Knife Angel

We the story of the Knife Angel in Taunton and Weston-super-Mare - most relevant to the West Country patch because of the tragic death of Barnaby Webber in the 2023 Nottingham attacks, and a number of knife crime incidents in recent months in Bristol and Bath.

My article here (left) brings all of that together with an exclusive report by our Chief Reporter.

The mission of an MP to tackle the climate and nature emergency by renewing legislation proposals

Connecting with our local South West MPs after the 2024 election, I chatted with Roz Savage, who represents the

brand-new South Cotswolds seat.

She was one of a handful to put forward a Private Members Bill, which the former record-breaking rower wanted to use to help tackle the climate and nature emergency.

The Lib Dem told me exactly why it's a cause so close to her heart, and just what this proposed Bill sets out to achieve.

Featuring fans and listeners

Our listeners LOVE sport, and my bulletins aim to bring them closer to the action - and put local fans at the heart of the story.

Two minutes every hour is precious - and packages featuring them, like what I produced after Bristol City lost the chance to take on Liverpool, brought a sense of personality and hyper-localness to our output.

Olympics & Paralympics 2024

Tasked with producing bulletins for Wiltshire over the summer of 2024, my mission was to cover the wider world outside of the Olympic bubble.

I interviewed Wiltshire gold medalist Tom McEwan, former local athlete Hannah Miley MBE, as well as the team supported by British Equestrian - which you can check out in the articles below:

Lighter stories
too...

This story dominated the headlines right across Somerset in April 2024, and even reached national and international outlets.

I chatted with the owner of the cafe not once, but twice - and delved into how the story came about; why he thought it went so viral - and also found the news hook of the story reaching places as far-flung as Los Angeles.

It's the epitome of a local story, with a positive spin, and something to get everyone talking... and it was all for a good cause, too, with the team raising money for the local Air Ambulance.
